Bariatric Surgery (Obesity Surgery)

Bariatric Surgery (Obesity Surgery)

• Bariatric Surgery makes changes to the digestive system to help very obese people lose weight when diet and exercise are not enough, or when their health is compromised. At Aster & MEDCARE, Bariatric Surgery is an option for people who have a body mass index (BMI) above 40. Surgery is also an option for people with a BMI between 35 and 40 who have health problems like type 2 diabetes or heart disease.

• There are 2 types of surgeries: restrictive surgeries and malabsorptive/restrictive surgeries. With a restrictive surgery, the stomach is physically made smaller, which reduces the amount of food that can be eaten, and digestion is slowed. With malabsorptive/restrictive surgery, the stomach size is reduced and connected to the intestine at a point farther down the digestive track.Because of the bypass, fewer nutrients and calories are absorbed, thus causing weight loss.
